Calypte
Biomedical Corporation is dedicated to developing and
marketing in vitro testing algorithms for improved
diagnosis of HIV infection, STDs, and other chronic diseases.
Calypte is a pioneer in the development of non-blood assays for HIV antibody
determination, and is the first and only company to achieve USFDA approval of
a urine-based HIV-1 antibody screening test and supplemental Western Blot.
Following the success of the Calypte urine-based HIV-1 antibody testing algorithm
used in laboratories, Calypte is now commercializing Aware™ rapid tests
for the determination of HIV 1/2 antibodies in blood, urine, and oral fluid. Calypte
has developed these three 20-minute tests to offer unrivalled testing flexibility
in a non-laboratory setting. Realizing that no single approach to HIV testing
will meet the needs of every testing environment, Calypte has developed three
different testing solutions, at least one of which should be well suited to a
given testing and counseling setting.
In mid-2004, Calypte was licensed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(USCDC) to manufacture a unique, quantitative EIA it had developed for the discrimination
of recently acquired versus long established HIV-1 infections. Intended for use
as an epidemiological tool, the Calypte HIV-1 BED Incidence EIA represents the
only practical means of determining HIV-1 incidence, rather than prevalence.
As such it has gained widespread favor among government institutions and HIV
intervention program administrators around the world as a means of effectively
allocating resources, measuring program success, and promptly focusing in on
HIV “hot spots”.
Although Calypte ultimately intends to market its rapid HIV testing products
worldwide, its immediate focus is on the developing world, where the need for
accurate and novel HIV testing methods is most acute. In order to maintain
the optimal combination of quality and economy, Calypte serves the rapid test
demand from most of these regions through a contract manufacturing arrangement
with an ISO-certified manufacturer in Thailand, and will serve Chinese demand
through a joint venture manufacturing operation managed directly by Calypte.
Future
Company activities will focus on the launch of rapid HIV antibody
tests suitable for the developed world, using a novel technology
licensed to Calypte by Ani Biotech, as well as expansion into
non-HIV diagnostics. |
